MCA Supports Individuals with Disabilities
It’s that time of year again, when the Executive Director, Joe Bretschneider, at Mainstage Center for the Arts completes its long-range plan for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which became law in 1990.
The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places that are open to the general public. The ADA gives civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, state and local government services, and telecommunications.
ADA plans are a requirement for all organizations receiving funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State. While it’s a plan that requires a lot of time to complete, it is necessary to ensure that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Mainstage Center for the Arts is in compliance with the ADA and will be submitting it’s updated plan to the NJ Theater Arts Alliance before the end of the year.
