Do You Remember School House Rock from the Old Days?
It’s a show packed with memories for anyone who remembers the iconic 70s Saturday morning Schoolhouse Rock cartoon that taught history, grammar, math, science and politics through clever songs. The musical brings all of it to life onstage, chronicling the story of Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching. Tom tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs as Just A Bill, Lolly, Lolly, Lolly and Conjunction Junction.
For many, Schoolhouse Rock is pure nostalgia.
“For me, as a middle school teacher in the 1980s and 1990s", says Ed Fiscella, Artistic Director for Mainstage Center for the Arts, "School House Rock was a shared experience. I used it in my teaching to make the subjects fun and memorable. Once the live shows became available, we incorporated it into our selection of plays and every generation of Summer Stagers at some point has been a part of the School House Rock experience. Not only is it great fun and a learning experience, but also a common link from parents in the 70's to today's kids."
Fiscella also loves the fact that each new generation of directors brings a fresh perspective in how to present the material, keeping it always familiar, yet different enough to enjoy new insights.
The large cast includes all of the performers from High School Musical. Cinderella, and Frozen.
The show runs July 31 & August 1 at 7:30 pm, and August 2 at 10:30 am at the Dennis Flyer Theatre, on the Blackwood campus of Camden County College. Tickets can be secured online at www.mainstage.org, phone: 856-227-3091, or at the door a half hour before each performance.
This production is sponsored by Ocean First Bank, Precision Power Wash, and Two-Two Creative.
