While enrolled in Mainstage Performing Arts Academy Audition workshop last spring, Veronica James, 10, had no idea how quickly the class would benefit her. She immediately put her audition skills to work. Since then, she’s performed regularly in local community theatre productions. Now she’s about to begin rehearsals for the Walnut Street Theatre’s upcoming production of Matilda. Veronica will portray one of the children in the ensemble.
“The audition workshop class and our teacher, Marissa, really helped me prepare for my auditions by working on monologues,” said Veronica.
Her mother, Jeannine, concurs and noted it was more than one class that helped Veronica along the way. Last year Veronica studied voice with Mainstage PAA instructor Vicki Gollihue. She also performed in Mainstage’s production of The Miracle Worker and Frankenstein Rocks, presented in conjunction with Riddlesbrood Theatre. Several years ago, she participated in the Summer Stage Kids Stuff program.
“All of these experiences, plus others, got her to this point,” said Jeannine. “It’s great to see her growth over a few short years. She was afraid to audition for Frankenstein Rocks. That experience boosted her confidence. Then, The Miracle Worker was primarily adults and the kids were treated like adults. Veronica learned how to act professionally on a set.”
Now that she has landed a part in this captivating story of the courageous little girl who dares to take a stand and change her own destiny, what does Veronica most look forward to?
“I just can’t wait for rehearsals to start. A couple of my friends are in the cast and I’m looking forward to making more friends, singing, acting, and dancing,” said Veronica.
Matilda runs November 16th through January 6th at the Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia. Veronica will appear in the weekday cast with performances. Those affiliated with Mainstage may receive a $10 discount on tickets with the code VERONJ at walnutstreettheatre.org
